IF YOU’VE EVER FELT UNWELCOME IN A YOGA CLASS, YOU’RE NOT ALONE.

She’s practiced yoga for over 10 years and has been lifting weights and swinging kettlebells for more than five years.

Janna specializes in alignment-based yoga — she teaches Iyengar + vinyasa style classes as well as yin and restorative classes, all of which are suited for students from all backgrounds and all levels.

Janna’s favorite hobby is rollerskating, something she’s been doing consistently since 2017. As she deepened her yoga practice, she realized that asana is a wonderful complement to skating and began offering “Yoga for Skaters” classes at Railroad Park in Birmingham.

Janna cites yoga as a primary means of coping during difficult times in her life — but she didn’t have an easy road in becoming comfortable in her practice:

I ATTENDED A YOGA CLASS AT THE YMCA — ONE OF THE FIRST YOGA CLASSES I WENT TO IN PUBLIC INSTEAD OF PRACTICING AT HOME. THE TEACHER CONTINUALLY CALLED ME BY NAME IN FRONT OF THE CLASS TO TELL ME WHAT I WAS DOING WRONG. I WAS SO EMBARRASSED THAT I CRIED, LEFT BEFORE SAVASANA, AND NEVER WENT BACK.”

Although this deterred her from practicing in public for several months, Janna eventually decided to revisit yoga classes at studios. During a restorative yoga class with Kim Drye, founder of HereNowYoga, Janna was inspired to pursue yoga teacher training to educate herself further in yoga history and philosophy, and to bring yoga to more people who may have felt isolated like she did in the past. Because of Kim’s welcoming attitude and deep knowledge of yoga, Janna chose HereNowYoga as the school for her 200-hour training and graduated from the program in 2020.

Come As You Are.

Janna believes the practice of yoga is very personal and looks different for everyone. Her aim is to make yoga less intimidating for those who are afraid to try it and more accessible for every body type, age, ethnicity and ability. In Janna’s classes, students won’t feel put on the spot or judged. With a deep reverence for yoga philosophy, Janna offers warm encouragement and an unconventional sense of humor to ensure students enjoy themselves and feel welcomed.
